Back Up Thousands of iPhone Screenshots, Text and All, Before You Switch Phones

Screenshots often hold something that exists nowhere else: an order, a receipt, chat evidence. Before you switch phones or reinstall, it is worth two minutes to take the whole library with you.

Who this is for

Anyone about to switch phones, reinstall iOS or free up space. The sort status in ScreenStack, the fields it recognized and the notes you wrote are not stored in the system Photos library. Moving only your iCloud Photos does not bring that work along. What you want is the whole library, not just the pictures.

What a backup contains

How to back up

  1. Open ScreenStack, go to Settings, and find the full library backup and restore entry under Safe Backup.
  2. Tap the button to create a full backup and wait until it is ready.
  3. Tap the button to save or share the backup file and put it in Files, iCloud Drive or on a computer. The temporary file can be cleaned up by the system, so do this step right away.

The file goes only to the location you choose. It is not uploaded to our servers.

How to restore on the new phone

  1. Install ScreenStack on the new phone and open the backup and restore screen.
  2. Tap restore from backup and pick your backup file.
  3. It first verifies the file format, version and the integrity of every item, then imports, and reports how many items were imported and how many duplicates were skipped.

A restore merges, it does not replace: screenshots already there are skipped and the current library is not cleared. One thing does not travel: the permission to delete from Photos is not carried over, so the first permanent delete on the new phone asks for access again.

A sensible order

Back up before the switch, keep the old phone for a few days, and check that the new phone has your latest important shots before you wipe the old one. If you also want to free space, sort first, then clean, and back up last, so the backup does not carry a pile of images you meant to throw away.

FAQ

Is the backup uploaded to your servers?

No. The backup file is handed to a location you choose, such as Files, iCloud Drive or a computer. It is not uploaded to our servers.

Will a restore overwrite the screenshots already on the new phone?

No. A restore only merges missing items and skips duplicates. It does not wipe or overwrite the current library. A damaged or incomplete backup is rejected at the verification step and leaves the current library untouched.

Does the backup feature cost anything?

No. Exporting a full backup and restoring it are free.

Take the whole library with you before you switch.
